Kinga Maciuszak:
On Middle Iranian Nomina Agentis in -TAR

Some scholars maintain that the suffix -tar is no longer productive in Modern Persian. However, the evidence of the Modern Persian dictionaries proves that there are about 30 forms with this suffix, still used and active in New Persian. 20 of them are archaisms from Middle Persian and 10 are new forms not attested earlier. These words are employed chiefly in writing and the literary language, while in the spoken language, they are being gradually removed by the present participles in -ande. In my paper I would like to stress a very interesting phenomenon of revival of the Middle Persian names of agent in -tar. These forms are being restored and introduced into Modern Persian as "artificial neologisms". This phenomenon of their revival takes place thanks to many Persian writers, who are now engaged in translating various Middle Persian texts into New Persian. Another problem is the change of meaning of the original nomina agentis in -tar, which are now passive in signification. My paper will also present a short outline of their historical development.
