Peter Alford Andrews:
Wie entstand ein osmanisches Zelt?

Despite the clear evidence of the importance attached to tents by the Ottomans, none have been examined in detail until very recently, and even the Ottoman nomenclature is by no means wholly clear yet. The display of specimens in the Askeri Müzesi in Istanbul, and the current exhibition at the Topkapi Sarayi now at last do some justice to the genre: it is to be hoped that these will attract the attention they deserve. Recognition was confirmed by the organisation of the first tent-symposium in Munich in 1999.
The recent publication of Nurhan Atasoy's book Otag-i Hümayun now allows some comparisons to be made among the surviving specimens, and the work done by both her and Hedda Reindl-Kiel in the archives has done much to make clear how tentage was administered.
The restoration of the specimens at Ingolstadt, Dresden and the Deutsches Historisches Museum at Berlin offers the opportunity for a detailed examination of how these tents were conceived and executed.
A careful examination of one of these can demonstrate the standards of measure used in laying out the dimensions, and the sequence in which the parts were assembled, besides the materials used in different positions. The rationale underlying the manufacture can be understood in relation to function and mass- production. The way in which the surfaces are divided for ornamentation can be analysed, and the question of whether a system of proportion analagous to that for architecture was used can be reviewed.
The variations in the ornamentation and colouration, and the system by which these were regulated, become clear.
The complete conception can then be compared with what is known from other specimens, both in form and in design, and the range of variation over a given period explored in relation to what was prevalent both before and after the seventeenth century. Reference can also be made to relevant bookpaintings.
